help with my swing!??

I have an r5 Taylor made driver and i can’t seem to hit straight with it at all. I always shoot way right. Is it too long? i also have some trouble with hitting the ball of the with irons. they always go way right even with the driver and sometimes 3wood. help plz cause i play a lot of golf!!!!

Well lets see it could be your swing path is to much inside to out. It could be you are not releasing the club properly. It could be that your lie angles are off. It could be that your lower body is outrunning your upper body. It could be that you are sliding your hips instead of rotating your hips. Also, it could be that you are pulling the club down from the top of your swing causing you to get stuck behind the ball. The shaft in your clubs may not be the correct flex. Take your pick.

High ball flight with new clubs?

I bought a new set of MX-25’s to replace my Taylor Made Supersteels. I believe the lofts on the MX to be the same if not lower on some of my Supersteels. Anyway, I was hitting them at the range and on the course and my ball flight was quite high. I DO have a high ball flight to begin with, not crazy high but high. My old Supersteels, I hit my 9 Iron about 140. 7 about 160. Both with relatively little roll. On the new Mizzy’s, I’m hitting some clubs the same length if not 5 yards shorter…hard to tell. But the flight is higher for sure.

What options should I explore:
1) de-loft the clubs
2) change shafts
3) fix my swing
4) go back to my supersteels

I’d rather go in that order…but which will be more effective for me? And I’d rather not mess with my swing – being a new Dad, I don’t have THAT much time for golf anymore. :(
Thanks for the feedback thus far. Allow me to provide more details.

High ball fight is noticed pretty much all the time so head and tail winds aren’t really a factor. Both shafts on my TM’s and Mizzy’s are reg flex and the latter are mid-kick point. I don’t know where the kick point is on the TM’s but I do know that both are Rifle’s.

I wanted to double check the kick on the Mizzy’s so going onto their site, I noitced that the ball flight for the shafts I have are ‘High’. I think I’ll go with option #3….so maybe I’ll post another question as to how to pick the right shafts. Thanks again!

Spencer –

Very thought out question, when people ask good questions like this it’s easy to point out options.

Still you could have provided more info, like the shaft differences in both sets of clubs….how many times you’ve noticed this higher ball flight, example….was this one day on the range and you were hitting into a 10 mph wind? Or has this been a consistent problem…I ask this because there are a lot of factor that could be contributing to the high ball flight.

However deal with your 1 through 4 and then you’ll have a bit more information to make your decision:

1) Changing the lofts will also change the bounce of your clubs. Bounce basically helps the clubs not to dig into the ground, the more bounce you have the less the clubs will have a tendency to dig. You will be reducing bounce, therefore the clubs will dig more…..depending on what kind of turf you play on this could be good or bad. If you play on a lot of hardpan fairways this may not be too bad. However if you play on soft turf, you may find yourself taking 2 pound beaver pelt divots on full shots….which you don’t want….so be careful messing around with the lofts, those clubs are designed to play with the loft they came from Mizuno with, I wouldn’t bend them.

2) Changing shafts could be a viable option and depending on the shaft could bring down the flight….try looking into flighted rifles….I’m not sure if they’ll fit into your clubs, but a professional clubfitter could tell you…..this will cost a good deal of money….couple hundred.

3) Check your ball position, this is the #1 indicator of what type of flight you’ll have…you should be playing most of the clubs right in the middle of your stance.

4) You’ll have to make the decision on whether to go back to the old clubs……..trial and error…..the true method to figure golf out :)

Good Luck!

Pro golfing question?

I am 14 years old and a freshman in high school. I started playing golf about 1 year ago and really loved it and was decent. So I worked at it and became pretty good. I tried out for the school team and made varsity as a freshman. I really would like to become a pro golfer and have a good facility across the street from me. I have a little public branch of Firestone Country Club across the street from me. I have a membership which gives me certain privileges. I go to the range at least 5 days a week but usually 7 days a week. I hit around 300-500 balls a day. I divide it equally for each of my clubs. I usually play 18 holes a week sometimes 27. The course only has nine holes but its still practice. My neighbor has a little putting green and lets me use it anytime I want. This summer I am going to do at least 2 tournaments in addition to my school team. I am currently a 4 handicap at my home course. In school I have good grades (this year I have a cumulative gpa of 3.33). So my question is do you think I have a legit shot of going pro in golf on tours such as the PGA, Nationwide, or Hooters tours. Also how do you go about getting a tour card and how much does it cost. And I forget to add if this means anything. My parents make around $150,000 a year combined and they have bought me all Taylor Made clubs, so they are all top of the line. And I live in Ohio so I can golf for 8 months per year and thats how long my membership lasts for.
Thanks in advance

Sounds to me as if you have made all the necessary moves already.. The key to becoming good at anything is to practice from sun up to sun down…

You seem very mature for a 14 year old… Keep up what you are doing and don’t let anyone stand in the way of your dreams… I do like that you are including your GPA in your description of what you are doing to become a Pro Golfer.. Most kids don’t understand the importance of grades…

To answer your question if I personally think you have a shot.. YES I do!!! You obviously are surrounded by the right people who are giving you excellent advise, or have an amazing train of thought for a 14 year old.

The ONLY bit of advise i can offer you is… You might want to hook up with a very good and reputable golf instructor as usually HS golf coach’s are not the best instuctors and have limited knowledge… As a rule HS Golf Coaches are just teachers who happen to play the game and have had no training other then watching the game and reading a couple of articles..

Do NOT take the advise of these people on here saying you are too young to think about it yet.. For one there is a guy on the pro tour right now who is only 17…. I bet they wouldn’t be telling him that he is too young.. For two you need to start very young to achieve to this goal.. Tiger started when he was 5…. Again.. keep your dreams and don’t listen to these people who really knows nothing about becoming a champion… You are on the right track… keep it up.

Whats your fav golf club driver ?

Im thinking of buying a new one and was looking at maybe a King cobra or a Taylor made r7. Whats the difference between a stiff shaft and a flex shaft?

Golf club shafts come in a variety of flex ratings. I’ve seen all these at one time or another:
- Ladies (L)
- Seniors (A)
- Lite*
- Regular (R, M)
- Firm*
- Wedge*
- Stiff (S)
- Extra Stiff (XS)

The above are roughly in order of stiffness, with obscure ones starred. There is, however, no agreed standard for flex. One firm’s regular will be stiffer than another (though any stiff will normally be stiffer than any regular). If you are a normally-built man, you probably want a regular. If you are particularly tall and/or strong, a big hitter, you probably want stiff. The best distance is obtained by having the right flex for your swing characteristics, so that the shaft releases its elastic energy just as you hit the ball.

Stiffness isn’t even all of the question. Some shafts have a lower flex point than others – they bend nearer to the club head. This tends to make the ball fly higher. Shafts also have different ratings for torque (resistance to twisting). The weight of the shaft can make a difference to the balance of the club too.

Then of course there’s the loft (face angle) of the club. Most amateurs should have a face angle of 11*-12* – even 14* for slow swingers – but most drivers are made with lower lofts of around 10*.

If you are spending big-name money on a driver, make sure you get fitted by a professional (NB better a club pro than a shop assistant at a discount store). Having the right shaft and loft will enable you to hit the ball 20 yards further AND straighter – and the only way to find the right one is to try lots.

To answer your initial question, I have a Benross V10 high loft with an Aldila NVS shaft. I’m very happy with it. I think the right shaft is more important than the right head.

13 years old and need more yardage?

Hi im 13 years old, I play golf and I hit my Callaway ERC Fusion Stock Regular shaft club about 255 yards. My swing speed is about 95. I want to hit the ball farther and straighter to. I was thinking about getting a Taylor Made r7 to see if I liked it since people said they are great drivers. But I wanted to know should I get the Mitsubishi Rayon Diamana s63 stiff shaft, or should I get a Aldila shaft put in? Should I stay regular or stiff help please? Any suggestions?

im going to say, you dont need any more yardage. your hitting the ball almost as far as my dad(280). but, if you must, id go with the TM r7, which is what i use. i hit about 180-200, but i am problable much smaller than you. my swing spped has see an increase fof about 20-30 after switching off of a driver similar to the Cala erc. just remember, it may matter on yourself and/or your style of play
By the way, im 13 also

EDIT: and problably a much worse golfer

Golf Drivers??? No clue on what to look for when buying one…HELP!!!!?

I’m buying my husband a new golf driver for Valentines Day…..Im clueless when it comes to golf and was hoping someone would know what to look for when buying a driver so I don’t look like a complete idiot at the golf store. Also, what is the price range for a new driver???? Thanks!

When buying golf drivers these are some of the things to look for.

Head size (common with new drivers 460cc)
Swing weight (D0 – D5)
Shaft (stiff, flex, there are different ranges for both)
Shaft lenght (depends how tall you are)
Driver head offset (promotes right to left ball flight)
Driver head loft angle (9.5 – 12.5 degrees)
Lie angle
Bounce

My suggestion is to get him fitted for one as a gift. They will check his swing speed for the right kind of shaft. Depending how good your husband is will depend on the type of driver head, angle etc,… he will want to improve his game.

Good brands are Ping G10, Taylor Made R7, Cleveland HiBore have fun !!

Is it normal to have a completely different swing for my driver than my wedges?

I have always hit my irons long, high and straight, but i have always had a nasty slice with my driver. I had a steep swing and I didnt transfer much weight. Well I recently fixed my slice by taking a much flatter backswing and transfering all my weight to my front foot on the downswing and now I carry the ball about 285 and straight… which makes me extremely happy, but now I cant hit my irons very well at all. Should I just use my old swing with my irons and use my new much flatter swing with my driver, or should I figure out how to use my new swing with my irons too (i’ve hit a lot of range balls with my irons lately trying use the same swing and so far its not working out very well)…

I was about a 10 handicap, but I never hit my drive in the fairway. I always thought that if I fixed my drive I would be close to a scratch golfer… but now that I crush straight drives I cant hit my irons anymore so I am still about a 10 handicap, go figure, just when you think you have the game of golf figured out.

I use a taylor made burner 10.5 and thin tour style ram irons if it makes any difference. And please dont just tell me to get a lesson. I dont need someone trying to make my swing look just like theirs, im short and my golf pros are tall so it usually doesnt work out very well, ive tried. I just need some good tips to try on the range.

Hey Burns you can relax you’re perfectly normal. You sound like you always had a single axis swing; you know like the stack and tilt that’s all the rage. Well this swing has been around forever and produces as you describe a steep angle of attack and solid contact with the irons. This swing also produces a very consistent ball flight and distances with the irons however one of the drawbacks is the steep angle doesn’t work to well with woods especially the driver so what to do. The driver has a flatter lie angle than the rest of your clubs so it’s natural to let yourself swing on a flatter swing plane and let yourself sweep the ball with your woods producing on line drives that react to the loft on your driver. Absolutely the right thing to do ; also right is to swing the irons on a more upright plane and hit down on a steeper angle as you used to do. You practise lots so being able to control both your irons and your driver should not be a problem as you’ll be using the same swing but changing the angle of attack only. I like your choice of driver and player’s blades. Lower scores are just around the corner. Good luck.

is nike golf clubs and balls inferior than other brands? i have heard they are

is nike golf clubs and balls inferior than other brands? i have heard they are

Yeah they are

I went to the range the other day and tried out a few drivers. The nike felt bad. When i went from the nike to the taylor made i increased my distance by at least 15 yards. Nike was just not smooth. It is just hyped up because of tiger. Tiger can play nike good because tiger can play anything good.

Golf – Use a lower loft on my driver?

Hello,

I am an avid golfer and currently play to a 12 handicap.

I have been using a Taylor Made r5 driver, reg flex with a 10.5 loft. I am very comfortable with the driver and strike the ball very straight (hit about 70% of fairways). The problem is, the trajectory of my ball resembles a shot with a 7-iron (up high then straight down) as opposed to low and long. I hit the ball between 245-255 yards off the tee, however I know that because of my high ball flight, I am leaving yards on the table.

My question is this: How much of a difference could I see by changing to a lower degree in loft? Instead of buying a new driver, could I have the club "bent to" a lower degree?

Thank you in advance for your time.

-Chris

Don’t think your answer is a less lofted club (and don’t even think about bending a driver), you probaly hit the ball too much on your up-swing. Try putting the ball half a balls width or a full balls width back towards the middle of your stands and I’m sure you will get a lower trajectory and a 10-15 yards longer drive. And if you can make that shot with a slight draw (your balloon shot with hardly any roll indicates back-spin on the boll instead of a prefered top-spin) I’m sure you’ll soon sniff on the 300 yards line…

Cheap high spin golf ball?

I’m on a very tight budget but love high spin balls (bad combo). I can get a guy at my local pro shop to give me a dozen Srixon Z-URC’s for $30. While that is hard to beat, what are some of your favorite cheap high spin balls? Has anyone tried some of the new balls like the Top Flite Gamer?

I don’t care what anyone says, you get what you pay for in golf balls. The best new deal is the Callaway Hot Bite (the green box). They play very good in all aspects and cost about $15 less than the premiums. My current favorites, for general playing, is the Taylor Made TP X-outs. I know, I know, but like you said, times is hard. Dick’s sporting goods sell’s them for $14.99 dozen.
